Cuthbertson High School band, members recognized nationally
The Cuthbertson High School band was recognized Tuesday by the Union County Board of Education after it won the SuppportMerit Award, a national acknowledgement.
The school is one of only two in North Carolina and one in 120 schools in the nation to receive the SupportMerit Award, which is part of The Best Communities for Music Education program.
The 137-member band, which is under the direction of Todd and Katie Ebert, received the SupportMerit Award from the National Association for Music Merchants.
“I am so proud of our performing students for putting in the hard work and dedication to earn accolades such as this,” said Todd Ebert, director of bands for Cuthbertson Middle and High Schools.
In its 16th year, the program singles out districts for outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders to make music education accessible to all students.
The same week the band was recognized for the SupportMerit Award, the school’s Wind Ensembles was accepted and participated with the National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, one of only 15 bands nationwide.
Band members Philips Clarke, Patrick Foray, Ben Laramee, Kevin Moranski and Garrett McCloskey were also selected for the honor band of America.
