PWMS Drama attends Broadway Junior Festival at Knights Theatre in Charlotte hosted by Blumenthal Theatre
At the beginning of each spring in Charlotte, Blumenthal Theatre hosts the Broadway Junior Festival at Knights Theatre in Charlotte. When the tradition began over five years ago, the festival was one day and featured only a few local schools. Now, it is a three day celebration of music, dance, acting, and education; a celebration that Parkwood Middle School Theatre has been a part of for four years.
Through the generosity of the Blumenthal Arts Foundation, all schools that participate in this festival receive a Broadway Jr. Showkit for free. A showkit contains scripts, music, director’s guides, and performance rights – all the basics a school needs to put on a musical. This year, PWMS Theatre will be presenting “Shrek Jr.”
The festival features schools from all over Charlotte-Meck and Union County. Each school prepares one song from their musical to perform at the festival. Professionals from iTheatrics, the company that adapts the musicals for middle/elementary performance, watch the performances and then work with students to refine their skills on stage. It is an opportunity for students to showcase their hard work, to learn more about the performing arts, and to see how other schools interpret different songs and dances.
Students from PWMS Theatre performed the song “Freak Flag”, which is all about accepting yourself for who you are and celebrating it! The Fairy Tale Characters encourage Shrek to, “let your freak flag fly!”. By the end of the song Shrek is ready to embrace the fact that he is an ogre and confess his love to Fiona. Our students received great notes from the iTheatrics professionals and had a great time performing for other schools. If you would like to see the full performance of “Shrek Jr.”, it will be held May 8th-10th at Parkwood High School Auditorium. For more information on the show or to find out how you can help support PWMS Theatre, please contact Ms. Nicole DePietro at email@example.com.
