WHS Lacrosse Players Sign Scholarship Letters

Signing on the dotted line these three Seniors will play Division II lacrosse at local NC colleges.  Scheich and Kennedy will attend Catawba College (Salisbury) while teammate Levi Capron will go to Lenoir-Rhyne (Hickory). The sport was sanctioned by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) in December 2008.  Lacrosse is one of the oldest team sports in American history.  First played by Native Americans to train young warriors for battle, the game today is not quite as brutal.  There is however still plenty of action. It has similar offensive and defensive concepts as basketball, a likeness to the rules of hockey and the physicality of football.  Lacrosse has been called “the fastest game on two feet”

Weddington’s Men’s lacrosse is led by Coach Mark Burman.  Playing in Conference 12 along with Charlotte Catholic, Cuthbertson and Marvin Ridge, WHS had a very impressive 2010 season with an overall 8-8 record and ranking # 2 in the Conference. Coach Burnam says, “These three players set a good example in how they could lead the team.  Each will go on to represent Weddington High School well and are all deserving of the opportunity they’ve achieved.”

The program at Catawba College was formed in 1993 and is led by Head Coach Peter Bourque for the last 17 seasons.  At Lenoir-Rhyne, the program is just beginning. The new director, Greg Paradine, will be on hand to build it from scratch.  Both men’s and women’s lacrosse teams will be organized.

We wish these three graduating seniors much success as they head to college and continue the sport they’ve been enjoying at Weddington High.
