Annie Kids: A Benton Heights Smash Hit
Recently Benton Heights Elementary School of the Arts performed a children’s version of the Broadway hit Annie. The cast was comprised of 3rd through 5th grade students who auditioned to be one of the roles. Only 27 students of 75 were selected to be in the final cast. The students worked diligently and often were rehearsing 2 or more days a week after school. During this time, they were taught their lines, choreography, and music. The script was challenging, but the students excelled past expectations.
Annie KIDS was performed 5 times. They had 3 matinee shows and 2 night performances. During the matinees, they performed for Benton Heights students and students from around Union County. At night, they performed to families and prominent members of the community. The show was a raving success! The students even received the coveted standing ovation on more than one occasion.
On March 30th, the students participated in the Broadway Jr. Celebration at the Knight Theatre in Uptown Charlotte. It was a Blumenthal sponsored event. The cast had the opportunity to perform a selection from the show for the authors of the show! They were complimented on their excellent energy, acting, and dancing. In the afternoon, they received workshop training with some of the top directors in the industry. Overall, for the students that were involved in Annie KIDS it was a memorable and life-changing experience.
