OMNOVA Grant Excites Sun Valley Elementary School

SPLASH students show off their new Spanish library books.

Sun Valley Elementary School’s Spanish immersion students were surprised after spring break when they saw 142 Spanish library bound books in the media center. This is a huge accomplishment since the school had no Spanish books for students to check out and take home to read with their families.

First grade SPLASH teacher Vanessa Martinez said, “It’s great to get Spanish library bound books into the hands of our students.”

This opportunity was a direct result of a generous grant of $2,000.00 from OMNOVA, awarded to SVES School Library Media Coordinator Kevin Vickers. After the award was granted, the school’s Spanish teachers helped Mr. Vickers select appropriate materials for their school library.

Andrea Barbosa second grade SPLASH student Ben Sandoval said, “There are a lot of great books in Spanish. I can’t wait to read them all.”

The school currently has three Spanish immersion classes called SPLASH. Teachers in these classes are Visiting International Faculty from different Spanish speaking countries like Spain and only use Spanish when working with their students.

SVES SPLASH classes involve kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. The school has the expectation to increase its Spanish immersion program to involve one class in each grade level. As a K-5 school, this would mean that there would be six grade levels with Spanish-speaking classes.

The only way for a family to be involved in this opportunity is when their child enters kindergarten. Currently, there is a huge interest in the school’s SPLASH program as they have been visited by the state’s Superintendent Dr. June Atkinson and other state legislators.

Principal Dr. Terri Cooper said, “It’s exciting to see students check out Spanish books from our school’s Media Center. Doing so will help their parents see how successful many of them have become in reading Spanish.”
