Math 24 competitors earn silver and bronze medals
Math wizardry was in the cards at Weddington Middle School during the annual district 24 competition on April 16, 2015. The 24 Game is a math game in which competitors are given a set of four numbers and must use their skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to total 24. There are no calculators, pens or pads of paper allowed. Points are awarded for the number of equations completed and the difficulty level and tallied at the end of each round. The highest scoring students move on to the next round narrowing down the field until a sole winner is announced.
This year two Marvin Ridge Middle students, Cray Mann and Camille Letamendia, earned silver medals and two students, Colin Erb and Janet Green, earned bronze medals.
“Math 24 is a different and a fun way to look at math,” said Ankith Krishna one of the club members that went to the competition. Anyone can join the club by regularly attending the practices throughout the year run by the coaches Dianne Hooker and Don Koback. As the competition nears, fifteen students are chosen to attend the district competition. “This was a great year,” said Dianne Hooker. “We had over 45 students regularly attend practices and they were all fantastic!”
