Rock Rest Celebrating Earth Day

Earth Day is an annual event celebrating the planet’s environment and raise public awareness about pollution.  Earth Day is observed worldwide on April 22, with outdoor activities that will help our environment to remain healthy.

Our very own Master Gardener, Miss Schexnider along with her garden club members have been working year round to create a beautiful garden at Rock Rest Elementary School.  They have been busy weeding, chopping and getting the soil ready for planting new plants in the garden this spring.  Students have assisted Miss Schexnider with planting herbs, produce, and flowering plants in the garden.

This Earth Day, the garden club is creating a sensory garden for the children to enjoy.  A sensory garden is an environment which will stimulate the senses.  Using materials which children can see, smell, touch, taste and hear are all the components of a successful sensory garden.  The garden club members have been busy researching plants which children can safely touch and taste.  Most of the plants come in the form of herbs for the sensory garden.

The garden is an ongoing learning project each year at RRES.  Students learn so much about the importance of taking care of our environment.  They are learning responsibility and all the skills needed to grow a beautiful garden.
