Donalyn Miller Excites Students About Summer Reading
Students at Sun Valley Elementary are gearing up for summer reading! For the past several years, SVES students have earned recognition as being #1 in most minutes read in NC and #2 in the world.
Donalyn Miller, author of The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child, surprised the entire school with an author visit on Wednesday, April 22, to congratulate the school on their accomplishments and to challenge everyone to read during this summer.
While at the school, Miller talked to students over the school’s TV broadcasting system. Later, she was seen talking with local student authors Stephany Fernandez-Delgado in Lori Robinette’s 2nd grade class and Ella Kellogg in Shawnta Morrison’s 2nd grade class. Miller discussed how impressed she was with their conservation efforts in creating a website called S.T.A.now (Saving the Animals Now).
During her presentations, Miller asked, “What are your favorite things to do in the summer?” After students discussed their favorite summer activities with each other, Miller said, “She loved to read.” Two of Miller’s favorite children’s books are: One For the Murphys by Lynda Hunt and Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rich Riordan.
Throughout the presentation, Miller had students repeat, “Reading is awesome” to regain their focus after discussing favorite books and activities. Later that day students were still energized by Miller’s visit. Allison Cobb’s fourth grade student Hannah Robinette said, “Reading is awesome!”
Principal Dr. Terri Cooper said, “It is really great to see our students get excited about reading. Summer is right around the corner and reading is a great way for many children to pass the time.”
