Warriors make March Against Bullying Pledge
During the month of March Weddington High School focused on anti-bullying and sponsored a March Against Bullying Campaign.
As part of this monthly campaign, all freshman and seniors attended an anti-bullying presentation in the school auditorium. The guest speaker was Mr. John Halligan. Mr. Halligan lost his son Ryan to suicide on October 7, 2003 at the age of 13. At the time of his death, Ryan was a student at a middle school in Vermont. It was revealed in great detail after Ryan’s death that he was ridiculed and humiliated by peers at school and online.
In memory of his son, Mr. Halliagn spearheaded the Vermont Bullying Prevention Law of 2004. He also led the passing of a law in 2006 pertaining to suicide prevention education in public schools. Mr. Halligan spoke with students about the recognizing, reporting, and preventing bullying. By sharing Ryan’s story, Mr. Halligan hopes to educate others and prevent bullying.
In addition to the guest speaker, information was presented to better educate the student body about bullying and ways to prevent bullying in the future through the Dub Hub, our weekly student news program. The entire student body was asked to take a stand against bullying and sign the March Against Bullying pledge.
