Piedmont Middle Shooting Sports Takes 3rd Place
Piedmont Middle School Blue Archery Team placed 3rd in archery at the 2015 Youth Hunter Education Skills Tournament on April 25, 2015. Blue Team Archery members are: Kenneth Austin, Lucas Porter, Hunter Eudy, Weston Laney, Austin Williams. Coaches are: David Lindsey and Ken Porter.
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission held the pre-collegiate sports state championship at Millstone 4-H Center in Richmond County for youth to showcase their outdoor skills and demonstrate safety techniques they learned through the Hunter Education Program.
Youth competed in team and individual categories for rifle, shotgun, archery and orienteering on senior (high school) and junior (middle and elementary schools) divisional levels, with overall team and individual awards based on aggregate scores in all events.
The Piedmont Middle School Blue Team placed 5th overall for the Junior Team Division. Additional Blue Team members are: Will Simpson, Trevor Pistone, Austin Freeburn, Ethan Whitley, Anson Outen, and Hayden Baucom. Additional coaches are: Oscar Outen, Bill Williams, Scotty Tucker, Sean Jamison, Jerome Baucom, Evette Austin and Colleen Baucom.
There were 599 students from 61 teams participating in this year’s tournament, having advanced from nine district events across the state. Total attendance, including spectators, staff and competitors at the tournament was estimated at 2,100.
Teams are organized within public and private schools, as well as home-schooled students and teams representing organizations such as 4-H or FFA. Nine district tournaments, held in March, saw combined participation of more than 3,000 students from 311 schools.
