Sankofa: joining people together
Sankofa is a club at PR that is student-based and focuses on interpersonal skills, career interests, community service and fundraising. The club is open to any student and meets on the third Thursday of every month to discuss academics, behaviors, conflict resolution, and service and educational projects.
There are five faculty members who help with the club; one counselor, one science teacher, one math teacher, one exceptional children’s teacher and one in-school suspension teacher.
The club has been active this year with a t-shirt sale to promote the club in September, a trip to the Monroe Habitat for Humanity site to help with recycling in November and a fundraiser featuring Valentine Teddy Bears and providing Black History facts for the daily morning announcements in February.
Senior member Tia Clark commented, "As a senior this is my last year and I will miss being a part of an organization that celebrated me as an individual, taught me valuable life skills and gave me a chance to lead."
Club sponsor, Earlene Hoff, stated, "I enjoy working with Sankofa because it's an avenue that allows all students to take risks, broaden their horizons, and to become confident and competent global learners."
