Sun Safety on our Playground!
Three and a half years ago, Mrs. Christa Haller, PTO president at the time, learned about the sun shade grant opportunity through the AAD - American Academy of Dermatology. Several moms volunteered to pursue the grant. Dr. Darst, a dermatologist, sponsored the PTO and the PTO sun shade committee worked with Coach Mac and all the teachers to administer monthly sun awareness activities. They ran this program for a year before applying for and ultimately winning the $8,000 grant. We used that grant money to fund a sun shade that provides high UV protection to our children and teachers on the playground.
Today was an exciting day as we were able to cut the ribbon for the final stage of this endeavor. Students gathered around as Mr. Haller shared the information about how this fabulous sun shade came to be. Even Dr. Darst came out to help in the celebration! Everyone is thrilled with the shaded area and the concrete play area underneath. Thank you to all that made this vision become a reality. We certainly do have an amazing community!
