Foods II Honors Students Compete in Local Dessert Competition and Show off Their Skills
On May 2, Union County hosted its annual "Beach, Blues and BBQ" festival in downtown Monroe. Mrs. Washington's Foods II honor students competed in the competition this year preparing banana cupcakes with white chocolate macadamia nut frosting and razz ma tazz bars. Although Mrs. Washington's class did not bring home an award this year, the feedback from the crowd was rewarding enough.
"Having the students want to do this and seeing the pride in their product is always a reward to me. They make me take so much pride in the skills that are taught in class, and to see them actually applied to everyday learning is every teacher's dream," says Mrs. Washington. "Gabby and Jones joined me to represent their peers at the competition and really enjoyed themselves. I am so happy they took advantage and not for granted this opportunity."
Mrs. Washington stated that she is motivated by her students' drive, energy and motivation, which allows their passion for food to reflect in their smiles. The "Anything Dessert" competition is encouraged by the CTE Director, Robert Filter, to allow students to gain experience beyond the classroom.
In addition to participating in the festival competition this semester, these honors students created custom menu options to retain funds to build the Foods classes at Sun Valley High School. Weekly lunches included all homemade goods including roasted red pepper hummus to chicken fettuccine alfredo and cinnamon rolls. Funds will be used to purchase new equipment and hopefully fund "Table 128" t-shirts, a cash register and nicer menus.
"It's a ton of planning and prepping, but what drives me are my students," says Mrs. Washington. "I hope that the program continues to grow stronger and encourages students to pursue career options in culinary fields."
