5th Grade Takes Flight with Starbase
The Starbase program, which is funded by the United States Department of Defense, came to Rea View to help the students learn more about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, commonly known as STEM, as they prepare for the Science EOG on June 2nd.
The instructors, who were mostly made up of retired teachers and administrators, engaged the students through inquiry based curriculum using hands-on activities and experiments. Some of the lessons taught included physics, nanotechnology, and engineering. Math was included in these lessons through the use of the metric system and estimation. Teamwork played a pivotal role as the students worked together to explore, explain their findings, and to evaluate.
All of the training and learning in the classroom led up to the highlight activity, which was that the students created their own rockets and launched them into the sky.
The students were thrilled and amazed by the experience of learning that Science and Math can be fun at their age.
Rea View is planning to have Starbase come to help the 5th graders for years to come.
A big “Thank You” goes to our assistant principal, Emily Ness, who introduced this program to the 5th grade teachers and students!
