Piedmont High School Hosted the UCPS Health Care Careers Camp
Piedmont High School hosted the UCPS Health Care Careers Camp July 7-9th. On Tuesday, students explored various health care careers and heard about the career of Physician Assistant from Zan Messer, PA-C with Abdominal Transplant Services at CMC-Main. Students also learned about surgical robotics and prosthetics.
On Wednesday, students toured South Piedmont Community College and learned about the various health care programs the school offers. Students used the ultrasound machine, learned to give an intramuscular injection, heard about the nursing program and visited the simulation lab for the Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic program. In the afternoon, students learned about hospital infection acquired infections and how to use personal protection equipment. Lastly, the students practiced making towel art as a way to communicate with pediatric patients.
On Thursday, students toured CMC-Union’s simulation lab used to educate nurses, doctors and other health care professions. The tour also included visiting the Wound Center and learning how the hyperbaric chamber is used to heal wounds. Then, students visited Rob Ito, Prosthetic/Orthotics specialist. A patient of Mr. Ito’s agreed to come in while the students where there and the two of them showed how a prosthetic is developed for each individual person.
