14 gifted students from seven UCPS schools make All-State Band
Fourteen Union County Public Schools band students had the distinction of being chosen for All-State Band this year.
Students were chosen from three UCPS middle schools (Cuthbertson, Marvin Ridge and Monroe Middle schools) and five UCPS high schools (Central Academy of Technology and Arts, Cuthbertson, Marvin Ridge, Porter Ridge High schools and Weddington High).
There are three All State Bands: Middle School All-State; 9th/-10thgrade All-State; and 11th-12th grade All-State.
In order to make All-State band, students had to prepare scales, solos and sight-read on individual musical instruments.
They first competed with students at a district level, then went on to compete with other top musicians on a state level. Those deemed the best in the state on their instruments made the All-State Band.
Middle School All-State Band students were Sarah Austin from Cuthbertson Middle (Band Director Katie Ebert); Anna Walter from Marvin Ridge Middle (Band Director Chris Hardesty) and William Henry Helmsfrom Monroe Middle (Band Director Craig Retzlaff).
High School All-State band students were Brice Martin, Mickey Styne, James Stryska, and Kyle Johnson, all from Central Academy of Technology and Arts (Band Director Leslie Craven), Emily Chatelain, Philips Clarke and Ben Laramee, all from Cuthbertson High (Band Director Todd Ebert); Megan Zhane, Walter Bonar and Delaney Dewey, all from Marvin Ridge High (Band Director Keith James); Emily Taylor from Porter Ridge High (Band Director Ian M. Faires) and Nick Bellardini from Weddington High (Band Director Jill Brooks).
Students and their band directors were recognized by the Union County Board of Education during its June regular board meeting.
