Sardis Elementary Welcomes a New VIF Teacher
Everyone at Sardis Elementary School is excited to have a new Visiting International Faculty (VIF) teacher. Her name is Claire Geary and she is from the United Kingdom. She is actually from a place near Nottingham. She has been teaching for three years and is excited to be starting her fourth year at Sardis. Geary will be teaching first grade.
The VIF program is a growing part of Union County Schools (UCPS). Many schools across the district host visiting teachers from countries all over the world. Ms. Geary is the third teacher to work at Sardis from the UK. According to the VIF website, the purpose of the program is to provide global cultural experiences for students and teachers. The cultural exchange helps to build awareness of diversity and interconnectedness.
Ms. Geary was on hand at Sardis’ Back to School Night on Thursday, August 20. She was able t meet many of her new students. Students and parents were very excited to hear the news that they would be part of Ms. Geary’s class. Geary is new to the United States, but not to first grade. However, she pointed out that schools where she has worked in the past are quite different from ours in many ways. In the UK, there were no Special Area classes as there are at Sardis. Geary taught everything to her students including art, music and Physical Education (PE). Geary commented, “I am looking forward to the challenge of teaching in the United States.”
