The Bank of North Carolina Student Athlete of the Month award is awarded to a student based on his/her athletic performance, academic performance, and community involvement. Each high school student that is entered in this contest is hand picked by their athletic director.  The school’s athletic department of the monthly winners will receive $250.00. In May 2016, the judges will select one (1) high school senior applicant from all of the monthly winners to receive a $500.00 scholarship payable directly to the college or university the student plans to attend.

Athletic Director Ina Thompson had this to say, "We are so thankful that Bank of North Carolina is honoring UCPS high school students for not only their athletic performance but also their academic performance. I am ecstatic that Sarah was chosen as the Union County student athlete of the month. I am proud of what a well balanced student athlete she is."

Sarah Welch, the recipient of the award, commented, "I was completely surprised when I was nominated for the award and even more shocked when I won! It feels amazing knowing that Union County is making an effort to recognize student athletes. I couldn't be more honored."
