Porter Ridge High School FFA and Culinary Academy Receives Awards at Competition

On Saturday, September 19, 2015, Porter Ridge High School’s FFA and Culinary Academy entered into the Union County’s Cultural Arts and Local Foods Exhibition at the Union County Farmer’s Market. The FFA won second place for Best Flowering Potted Plant. They entered a window box with variegated and non-variegated germaniums they raised and sold in their green house last spring. They won third place in Best Hanging Basket for Swedish Ivy also grown and sold last spring. They also took home two more third place ribbons for hot peppers and sweet peppers that were started from seed and sold as a fund raiser for the PRHS FFA chapter. Great job!


The Culinary Academy also entered into the competition. The students canned some of the leftover produce they had before spring break as a way of using all of their food resources. While they canned a variety of foods, they entered in three categories: other spreads, other relishes, and other pickles. The radish pickles brought home a participation ribbon. While it was a creative use for leftover radishes the judges were at a loss on how to grade it. However, the Carrot Orange Marmalade  and Pepper Relish both were judged  as first place winners and took home two blue ribbons. Great job to all the student who participated in the making of these entries!
