Union County Early College
Summer Reading Guide 2010 - 9th Grade Honors English Classes

As an honors student and an emerging college student, you will not only be expected to comprehend literature on a literal level but also to analyze literature on an interpretive level. To Kill a Mockingbird will be the first unit we cover in your English course—Advanced Inquiry and Research; so to be prepared for the class discussions and activities on the novel, you will need to complete reading the novel and the Reading Guide for To Kill a Mockingbird. The completed Reading Guide will be due during the first or second full week of school. You will be given a due date for it on the first day of school. The Reading Guide will count as a major quiz grade.

During the first two to three weeks of school we will be completing a unit on To Kill a Mockingbird. I will use this unit to assess your reading pace and comprehension and to teach fundamental reading strategies to aid you in improving your reading pace and comprehension. Along with class discussions and activities, you will have homework assignments, Reader’s Log entries, a mini research project, and final test. All of these assignments will take place during the first two to three weeks of school.

Be sure to read carefully and DO NOT wait unit the last minute to do so. If you do a good job completing the Reading Guide, you will not need to reread the novel later when you have to complete assignments and projects for the novel. There will be copies of the novel available at UCEC for students to sign out for use over the summer and after school starts. Copies will be available in the main office. Also, the Union County Public Library has copies to check out. However, many students find it easier to purchase the novel and then mark passages or ideas in its margin rather than check out the book. Below is a list of local stores and online book services where you may purchase the novel.

  • Amazon.com
  • Waldenbooks, Monroe Mall
  • Wal-Mart—Monroe
  • Wal-Mart—Indian Trail
  • Target—Monroe
  • Barnes & Noble—The Arboretum
  • Barnes & Noble—Carolina Place Mall
  • Barnes & Noble.com

If you have any questions, please contact Mr. James Adams.

Over the summer I do not always check my e-mail every day, but I will respond to you as promptly as possible.

Download the Reading Guide---Questions to answer with To Kill a Mockingbird handout.

The questions follow in the order of the reading. You are to answer all questions in order to gain a thorough understanding of the book.
