‘Smooth sailing’ for first day of 2010-11 school year
As Union County Public School’s 328 buses dropped off students this morning (August 25, 2010), the 2010-2011 school year officially began; which, according to school officials, proceeded with no major problems reported. Schools across the county opened their doors to returning students. Here are just a few of those moments captured on this short video produced by the UCPS Communications Office. The schools represented are Indian Trail, New Town, Prospect, Rea View, Weddington, and Wingate elementary schools; East Union, Parkwood, Sun Valley and Weddington middle schools; and Forest Hills, Parkwood and Weddington high schools.
Prospect Elementary School Principal Jannie Bankston said she and her staff worked through the summer months to make sure everything was in place when school started at her school at 7:30 am today.
“The first day has gone very smoothly,†Bankston said. “The students and the parents seemed anxious to get school started. The teachers were very excited. They had their rooms ready and they looked so inviting. We’re off to a very good start.â€
Emily Garno, 5, a Prospect kindergartener, said she was very excited about her first day, adding that she most looked forward to reading books in class. “I can read,†she said. “I like Dora the Explorer.â€
Her mother, Christina Donahue said Emily is one of six children she and her husband got off to school today. The oldest is in high school. “We set up their book bags and got their clothes ready last night. We’re still not finished getting school supplies.â€
The first day at most UCPS schools was filled with reviewing school rules and going over classroom procedures.
