911 Remembrance Sparks Classroom Activity
Freshmen students in Mrs. Casey Zvanut’s English I course had the opportunity to focus their research on 9-11, timely for this week’s ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. In their study of the differences between primary and secondary sources, students reflected on the social impact of historical events and specific ways in which writers attempt to reach their audience. The class discussed the fact that reading about 9-11 evokes a very emotional response. Helton Deaguiar commented, "Researching 9-11 makes me feel respect for the people who served in 9-11; the firefighters, police officers, doctors, and nurses." Pictured are Youssou Diop, Mark Murphy, and Helton Deaguiar as they reviewed online sources about 9-11.
