Letters of appreciation for soldiers

Roxanne Newman delivered the letters written by Waxhaw's third grade students to Christa Lehosky, owner of Carvel Ice Cream Store in Rea Village. Also pictured is Eileen Swartz, the founder of Flags Across the Nation.

Waxhaw Elementary's third grade students demonstrated good citizenship by writing letters to deployed soldiers.  The students participated in a letter writing project through Flags Across the Nation, a non-profit organization created in memory of 9/11 that promotes patriotism through the arts.

Students wrote letters of appreciation to American soldiers deployed across the world.  In addition to the letters, students colored images of the American flags, which will be distributed with the letters they wrote.    "It was to thank them for protecting us," remarked Dylan Hampton, a third grade student in Roxanne Newman's class.

As a token of appreciation for participation, Carvel has given each third grade student an ice cream coupon to be used at the Rea Rd. location.
