Unionville Summer Camp Emphasizes Reading
The children at Unionville Summer Camp didn't just have fun and games during the summer--they read....and read....and read. The staff wanted to encourage reading, so a Reading Club was formed. In order to be a member, the children simply signed up, received a summer reading log and bookmark, then read each day at rest time. "Some of the children were so enthusiastic about reading that they took their books home to read," said Tammy Baucom, program coordinator. The children were awarded small prizes as they reached different levels of minutes and the grand prize was an ice cream party to celebrate the goal that was reached by the entire camp. "The children exceeded our expectations--we had a total of 15,561 minutes read!" said Baucom. The top four readers were: Chloe Combs (over 800 minutes); Nicholas Mullis (over 900 minutes); Janna Combs (over 600 minutes); and Ava Wilson (over 700 minutes). Unionville After School Program looks forward to offering another summer reading club in future summer camps and also expects to exceed the number of minutes read by campers in 2010.
