On Tuesday, September 21, 2010, selected teachers and students from Piedmont High School attended Wingate University’s Author’s Luncheon with Kelsey Timmerman, author of Where Am I Wearing?   The luncheon was a culminating event for a UCPS book study offered to high school English and Social Studies teachers. Social Studies teacher Brenda Drye, and English teachers Rhonda Hill and Stacy Vickers attended an all-day event which included a small group discussion and public lecture.

English III AP students were also offered the opportunity to attend since this book was one of their choices for summer reading. Junior Chris Mulford said, “Kelsey Timmerman opened my eyes to the conditions and poverty people have to live through to simply feed their families. Kelsey also inspired me to think about traveling after high school to examine and experience parts of the world I have never been to before.” Junior Brittany Pigg added, “I was also encouraged there is a way to make a difference and help others. “

To end the book study, Drye, Hill and Vickers will collaboratively plan a lesson centered on a chapter of Timmerman’s book to incorporate into their classes.
