Lowery gets his Jacket
Union County's most decorated high school football coach was honored with a pre-game ceremony on Friday, Sept. 24, 2010.
John Lowery, now in his 25th season as head coach at Forest Hills High, was presented his Shrine Bowl jacket before kicking off against Piedmont.
The Yellow Jackets' players and assistant coaches lined up on the field to see Lowery receive his jacket, which makes official his position as North Carolina's head coach for the 2010 Shrine Bowl game.
Lowery has led Forest Hills to the state playoffs 23 out of his 24 seasons, and has a career record of 223-95. He entered this season averaging 9.2 wins as head coach.
Lowery was an assistant coach in 1984, when Forest Hills won the only state football title in Union County history (post-desegregation).
He helped FH win 16 conference championships in the 1980's and 1990's, including a stretch of 11 in a row.
In the past five years, Lowery's Jackets have reached the state semi-finals three times.
Monroe coach Johnny Sowell will be among Lowery's assistant coaches for the Shrine Bowl.
The 2010 Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas will be played Dec. 18 in Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C., starting at 1 p.m.
The annual event started in 1937.
