Rufus Pep Rally
Our PTO rocks! So does our Literacy Facilitator, Mrs. Eichelberger. Together, they created a Reading Around the World program that started off with a bang! Thanks to our PTO, the Charlotte Bobcat mascot, Rufus, came to our school to kick off our reading incentive program. Students record how much time they read each night and if we can "read around the world" in 180 days, the school will earn a large prize. The students don't know what it is, but it is wrapped up in a large box in the media center. We will reveal the contents when we reach our goal.
The purpose of the 180 reading incentive is to encourage students to become lifelong readers. Parents and elementary educators only have a a relatively few days - a fraction of the child's whole life to get him/her set up for success. There are only 1080 days of school in elementary school. If one assumes that our student's average life span will be around 75 years, that is approximately 4% of a child's lifetime. That isn't much when research shows that lifelong readers begin in elementary school. This impacts their life.
The Reading Program is just one incentive to garner the love of reading for our students. Help sow the seed to becoming a lifelong reader.
