With help from CATA, Campus Kids has new flag
Central Academy’s Art teacher, Shelly Pentecost, was asked for her help in creating a flag for the Campus Kids pre-school in March. Ms. Pentecost felt that her Graphic Arts students could gladly take up this assignment. This graphics arts class has 17 students ranging from grades 9 through 11.
“This was a great collaborative project for the students,” Pentecost said. “When working as a graphic artist it is important to listen to your customer. The pre-school students were interesting test customers. It allowed the high school students to ask questions and get feedback as to what the pre-school students wanted on their flag.”
The pre-schoolers showed their new buddies around the classroom and told them what they did every day. Information was gathered from the teachers and the director as well, and then this information was used to design the flag. Color was one of the most important factors to the pre-schoolers. Besides the name of the pre-school, five stars appear on the flag.
“The five stars represent the rating the school has earned involving their quality as a childcare center,” Pentecost said. “It is the highest rating a center can get. The flag encompassed everything the pre-schoolers had shown us. The graphic arts students learned how to ask the important questions and also gained a new buddy in the process.”
Seventeen digitally composed flags were created/printed and shown to the Campus Kids. All were outstanding but one was chosen due to its color and balanced simplicity. This flag was created by CATA student Cody Baker. The flag has a purple background. White letters spell out Campus Kids. The five stars graduate from large to small and are red, blue, green, yellow and orange.
“We were very excited about the flag idea coming this far and were very fortunate to find a seamstress to bring the whole idea to fruition,” said By Nancy Adams, Campus Kids Child Care Center director. “Sherry Poole (Sewing by Sherry) did a superb job in constructing the flag.”
On May 27, 2008, the Campus Kids, Baker and the rest of Ms. Pentecost’s graphic’s arts class met around the flag pole (donated by parent Jamie Backey). Cody attached and raised the flag as the school staff and students cheered and clapped.
