And the Band Plays On

The Band of Pirates continues its award-winning tradition with this year’s planned program featuring hits from the 1970s to today. Ably led by Porter Ridge Middle and High School’s Director of Bands, Ian Faires, they have racked up seventeen first place awards at three competitions so far this year.

This year’s program is entitled “Marching Band Through the Years,” providing a retrospective look at music from the 1970s to the 2000s. The program has four segments including well-known hits like "Music of the Night" from Phantom of the Opera as well as patriotic tunes.

Drum Majors, Christian Hubbard and Morgan Gattrell, have led the Band of Pirates to First Place finishes in all three of their competitions this year at Catawba College, East Rowan and most recently, Hickory Ridge. This season is the first time the Band of Pirates has earned first place marks at all of its competitions.

Colorguard Captain Jaleea Cunningham sums up her marching band experience when she says, “The band has become my family, almost like a second home.”

On Saturday, October 30, the Band of Pirates will once again host the Pirates’ Cove Classic featuring a number of marching bands from high schools in the surrounding area.
