Meet WDES Teacher of the Year: Ms. Christy Baines

Ms. Christy Baines, Teacher of the Year

I was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon; raised in Union County, North Carolina. I attended Hemby Bridge Elementary, Piedmont Middle, Piedmont High and Independence High Schools. I went to East Carolina University where I received a BFA in Art Education with a concentration in Commercial Advertising.

My first job was in Halifax County where I taught art at four elementary schools. My next job was at GR Whitfield a K-8 school in Pitt County. I then took a job in Union County where I taught art at Waxhaw and Western Union Elementary Schools for one year. Next, I moved to Shiloh Elementary for 12 years. I also taught art at New Salem Elementary, Wolfe Center and Pre-Voc Center while based at Shiloh. I am now at Weddington Elementary School for my fourth year.

I love my job! I love displaying my students’ art in the community. I love the smiles on the students’ faces and the joy in their accomplishments when they achieve a task that they thought at first was impossible. It is amazing what a little encouragement can do. I expect them to try their best at everything they do… in life. If you can look back on life and know that you honestly gave it your best effort, you should be satisfied with whatever the outcome may be…live life… joyfully…. no regrets.

When I am not teaching art I can be found traveling, taking photographs, drawing, boating, water skiing, wakeboarding, working out, spending time with friends, family and playing with my dog.
