An Exceptional Children’s Parent Awareness Night 2010

Melinda Plue, Executive Director of The Arc of Union County and her brother-in-law, Jake Plue

On Tuesday, Oct. 19th the Exceptional Children’s Programs Department of Union County Public Schools (UCPS) with the assistance of the Special Needs Advisory Council (SNAC), hosted An Exceptional Children’s Parent Awareness Night. The event was held at the UCPS Professional Development Center from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with approximately 50 parents in attendance. Lori Cauthen, new EC Director for UCPS, introduced herself and the EC Central Services staff, welcomed everyone and introduced the guest speaker: Melinda Plue, Executive Director of The Arc of Union County.

The night began with Melinda Plue, Executive Director of The Arc of Union County, speaking about resources for support and community involvement for students and adults with disabilities and their families. Melinda provided a personal story about her own commitment to assist individuals with developmental disabilities to live full and meaningful lives. She introduced her brother-in-law, Jake Plue, who has developmental disabilities and they talked about the journey towards Jake’s independence. A video about the services which the Arc can provide was also shared with an invitation to become a member of the Arc to help support the many ways in which this organization strives to meet the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

Other breakout sessions were presented in concurrent sessions after the general session with Melinda and Jake Plue. Those sessions were presented twice so that parents would have the opportunity to attend more than one session if they had need or interest. The following sessions were a part of the night’s events:

• The Occupational Course of Study and Community Based Training for Secondary Students with Linda Little, Secondary Transition Specialist
• Speech/Language, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy in the School Setting with Julie Parlier, Lead Speech/Language Pathologist, Carolyn Smith, Lead Physical Therapist, and Janet Mapes, Lead Occupational Therapist
• Transition from CDSA to EC Preschool with Glenda Rape, EC Preschool Specialist
• Effective IEP Meetings with Ruth Strunck, Chairperson of SNAC, Janie Webb, Assistant EC Director, Lynn Makor, School Psychologist, Wanda Allen, EC Reading Specialist and Donica Davidson, Adrienne Anderson, John Miles and Kelley Zorn, EC Program Specialists
• And Re-Evaluations – Who, What, When, Where & How? With Matt Schleider, Lead School Psychologist

The night ended with positive feedback from parents and staff alike. Be sure to watch the UCPS EC website for upcoming information about the parent awareness night in the spring.
