Band Competes in Bands of America in Georgia Dome

Band preparing to enter the stadium for the Bands of America competition in the Georgia Dome.

The Piedmont Marching Band traveled to Atlanta, Georgia on October 29 to compete in the Bands of American competition in the Georgia Dome. The band placed 7 out of the 11 bands in their class and received a rating of “Excellent.” This is the second year that the band has competed in this national event, and they raise thousands of dollars to make participation in Bands of America possible. The band previously received one Grand Champion honor at a local competition and placed in the top three in several other competitions.
After the competition, band director Jody Lukac acknowledged that “they had the best performance I’ve seen in my 12 years at Piedmont!” In last year’s competition, the band placed 39 overall and this year, they improved to 29 overall.   This is only the second year that Piedmont’s band has competed in the Bands of America competition, and they hope the tradition will continue. Band member Rachel Purser stated that, “It was an experience that I’ll never forget.” This unforgettable experience motivates band and color guard members to raise money via cookie dough sales, parking cars at Nascar events, and various other fund raisers. In addition, the band begins practicing in August and spends countless additional hours preparing specifically for the Bands of America competition.   It costs approximately $13,000 in travel expenses to make the Bands of America competition a reality for the band, but Lukac concedes that “the kind of educational experience they receive in Bands of America is unmatched anywhere else in the band world”.
The band is already busy preparing for next year’s competition season. They kick off their annual cookie dough fundraiser this week through November 12. The sale includes nine different flavors of cookie dough, four kinds of cheesecakes, and cinnabon. If you would like to support the band in this fundraising endeavor, contact any band member or email Jody Lukac
Congratulations to the band and color guard on an awesome season!
