Night of Latin Voices

The Night of Latin Voices was celebrated on November 1st with all of the schools in the Porter Ridge cluster involved. The purpose of this special event was to share important school and community resource information with Hispanic families in their home language to help students to maximize their academic potential. Parents had an opportunity to talk with counselors and administrators and to learn more about how to enrich their child’s education.

The schools partnered with multiple organizations to provide information and resources, including Latino Outreach Program, United Family Services, CMC Union, College Foundation of N.C., Community Health Services, Union County Health Dept., Substance Abuse Prevention Services, School Resource Officers and Sherrif’s Dept., Child Care Resources, Union County Community Action, Turning Point, Lifestyle Family Fitness, South Piedmont Community College, Your Latino Agency, Safe and Drug Free Schools, the Latin American Coalition, Union County Library, National Art Honor Society, ESOL teachers and Alex’s Parilla.

Parents were provided with a list of all of the contact persons at each school who speak Spanish. In addition to the booths and community and school resource information presented, students from the various schools also performed. Mrs. Castiblanco, Ms. Poindexter and Ms. Vandeburg’s students performed several songs in Spanish, including “Arroz con Leche” and “Stand By Me.” This was the second year of this event and we hope to continue to offer this, and other events like it in the future.
