State Title Returns to Cuthbertson
Senior McKenna Karas and Sophomore Kalli Karas, defending doubles champions, rallied from a set down to win their second consecutive state title in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2A women's tennis tournament championships Saturday October 30, 2010 at the Cary Tennis Center. The Karas sisters defeated Ashe County 6-1, 6-2 in the State Semi-Finals. The sisters reached the State Finals with an undefeated record to face Salisbury in the finals. The Cavaliers lost the first set 3-6 then led the second set 3-1, but the Hornets of Salisbury tried to hang on while trailing 5-4. Senior McKenna Karas connected on four straight first serves to erase a love-deficit and close out the set 6-4. The Cavaliers then took control of the match by sweeping the Hornets in the next set 6-0. “The Karas sisters are exceptional tennis players and athletes. They have only lost one match in the last two years and were undefeated in the 2010 season including their march to defend their 2009 2A doubles championship. During the state tournament the girls gave up only 7 games until the final match against Salisbury. In their final match they came from behind to receive top honors on Saturday October 30, 2010,†said Coach Wendy Medlin. The Cavaliers finished their tremendous season with a perfect record of 18-0. Way to go Cavaliers, on bringing the title back to Cuthbertson and setting a new record!
