Panthers Capture Football Conference Title

The Piedmont Panther football team defeated Berry Academy Friday night 24 – 18 to win the Rocky River Conference Championship. The team went undefeated in conference play this season and finished the regular season with a record of 10-1.

The Panthers entered the conference championship game Friday night with at least a share of the Conference title.   On less than desirable field conditions, the Panthers scored in the first quarter and never looked back. The defense contained Berry’s superior speed for most of the game and went into half-time with a 14-6 lead. In the second half, the teams traded scores until the Panther defense had a big stop in the 4th quarter, which allowed Jade Montgomery to kick a 29-yard field goal to put the Panthers up by two scores. With under two minutes to play, Berry caught a tipped pass in the end zone for their final score. The ensuing onside kick attempt went out of bounds, and the Panthers were able to run four plays to end the game.

Key performers for the Panthers were Lucas Fisher and Antonio James –Defensive Players of the Game; Kyle Eiss –Offensive Player of the Game; and Jade Montgomery-Special Teams Player of the Game.
When asked how it felt to win a conference championship, defensive end Lucas Fisher replied, “It’s just such an honor and we knew we were capable of it all year, but to finally have it over with gives us momentum heading into the playoffs.”
While clutching the game ball after their victory, Coach Ambrose said, “I am just elated. Our defense really was the difference as they’ve been all year. I feel like a proud parent of about 60 young men and one girl.”
In the playoff bracket released on Saturday, the Panthers are the number one overall seed in the West 2AA bracket and will have home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Panthers will now face West Stanly on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in Panther Stadium. Earlier in the season, they defeated the Colts by a score of 17-0.  The complete Playoff Bracket is available for download. Come out and show your Panther spirit as they begin their playoff run!
