Global Awareness Is Out Of This World!

Commander Edwards answers students' questions about space travel.

Parkwood welcomed a very special guest on Friday, November 5, 2010 when former NASA astronaut Commander Joe Frank Edwards, Jr., USN Ret. visited to discuss space exploration and the role preparation played in helping him achieve his dreams.

To help gain a more global perspective, Social Studies Curriculum Coordinator, Stacy Moore, set up the visit for the Global Awareness classes taught by Jennifer Bess.

Students researched and prepared questions for Commander Edwards and learned not only about his time in space but also about him serving in the Middle East while in the Navy. Senior Elizabeth Carns said, “I was amazed by how easily astronauts get used to living in space, and I was surprised to learn that they sleep floating in hammocks!”

Commander Edwards was in town for the Warriors and Warbirds Air Show that took place at the Monroe Executive Airport Nov. 6th and 7th. He flew in to Monroe that morning as the sun was rising in his World War II era plane.
