Jacob Brewer to Receive Prestigious Football Award

Piedmont High School Senior Jacob Brewer cannot say his high school football career has been easy, but he can say it has been extremely successful and inspirational. Hence the reason he has received the High School Comeback Player of the Year Award by the Charlotte Touchdown Club. The award’s purpose is to “elevate the community’s awareness of football as a safe, healthy, and character building sport.” He will accept this award later in December at a very prestigious affair where the Bronko Nagurski Trophy for the best defensive player in college football will be awarded as well.

Around school, Brewer looks like the perfect football Center; he’s healthy, big, and strong. That is why surprise strikes his fellow students and fans when they see him come out onto the football field with two giant knee braces on. Without knowing Brewer personally and only knowing his football stats, one would be very surprised to find out he missed both the 2008 and 2009 football seasons, and the first three games of the 2010 season due to injuries.

Jacob tore cartilage in both knees, the right in 2008 and the left in 2009, resulting in microfracture surgery. After two surgeries Brewer came back this 2010 season ready to go; however, before the first game he tore the cartilage in his left knee again. This resulted in him undergoing arthroscopy and having the cartilage removed.

Brewer said, “I just love football. It’s my life.” That attitude is what mentally prepared Jacob for his return for the fourth game of the season. Brewer has played every game since his return aiding in the team’s regular season record of 10-1.

Piedmont High School’s Athletic Trainer, Felicia White, said, “He has worked hard no matter how many injuries and surgeries he has endured; he kept his mind focused on the ultimate goals, which are to exceed academically and to play football.”

This is why Jacob Brewer will be awarded the High School Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Brewer has touched everyone greatly by his inspirational comeback and courage. Coach Frank Ambrose said, “Jacob committed himself to rehab each and every time. Each time he came back bigger, faster, stronger, and more determined. He has earned the respect of his teammates, staff, and school. He is truly our team leader.”

That is what the High School Comeback Player of the Year Award is about. It is an award to inspire players to have not only the mental strength, but physical fortitude to comeback from injuries, and to show great character in doing so.
