CATA Wrestlers Win Redhawk Invitational Tournament
Central Academy’s wrestling team beat up on the bigger schools over the Thanksgiving weekend, winning the 14 team Redhawk Invitational Tournament in decisive fashion.
The 1A Cougars won the tournament with a score of 238 points, well ahead of second place Porter Ridge, a 4A school that finished with 200 points after leading the Cougars by one point after Friday’s matches. It was the Cougars, though, that controlled day two, with wrestlers winning championships at the three heaviest weight classes.
“I was a little unsure if we were prepared for a two-day tournament,†said Cougars coach Mike Jacobus. “I was definitely happy with the first day, being in contention. The second day I knew we had a couple of tough matches in the semis, Daniel Gregorich and Kyle Rollins had tough matches. After that the upper weights really rallied and had a couple of big pins, and that ultimately made the difference.â€
Those three wins were worth 20 points for the Cougars, including pins from 189 Jason Gulotta and 215 Quinton Plyler. Defending 1A state champion Will Robinson had to work for a 4 - 3 victory over Porter Ridge’s Patrick Phillips. Gullota scored the most points for the Cougars with 28 by winning all three of his matches by pin.
