First Book Charlotte Celebration
First Book Charlotte renewed a book grant written by Brittany Slagle and Erin Felker for BHESA students. BHESA was the recipient of $17,000 in books for our students this year. First Book’s goal is to provide books for the home which are appropriate to students' reading levels.
A First Book celebration was held on December 3, 2010. Early in the school day students participated in global pre-reading activities in the Media Center, cafeteria, and gymnasium. The goal of the pre-reading activities was to ignite students’ excitement for their new books and to encourage them to think globally. Students from CATA and Porter Ridge High School volunteered to work with students on these activities.
Each student received a gift-wrapped bundle of books that they will take home. Students received six books during this book distribution. An additional six books will be distributed to students in the spring.
First Book Board Members attended the celebration, including co-founders Colleen Luddington and Erin McClure. When students went back to their classrooms, Ms. Luddington and Dr. Mary Ellis, Deputy Superintendent of Instructional Programs for Union County Public, spoke to students in a live broadcast about the gifts of books they were receiving. Following the broadcast and book distribution, volunteers read the books to the students. Students were delighted to be able to follow along in their own copy of the book.
Thanks to Ms. Slagle and Mrs. Felker who coordinated the morning for our students and to all of the volunteers who helped with the organization, sorting, and wrapping of books! A special thanks goes to our high school volunteers as well!
We are so grateful to First Book Charlotte for enabling us to present these books to our students.
