Kyra Gunn, Unionville Elementary, chosen as UCPS AIG Teacher of the Year
Unionville Elementary AIG teacher, Kyra Gunn, has been selected UCPS AIG Teacher of the Year for 2011-2012. Congratulations to Ms. Gunn on this recognition.
Ms. Gunn studied at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she completed an exchange program with Kingston Polytechnic just outside of London, England. She began her teaching career in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. She was a finalist for the Harris Teacher of the Year for work related to student self-assessment, student led conferences and authentic work products. This is Ms. Gunn's 17th year teaching and her 6th year teaching AIG at Unionville Elementary School.
"I love this job and the delivery model used in UCPS. Students are able to receive an academic education with a continuity of curriculum and instruction instead of enrichment only. Their work is "instead-of" not "on-top-of" the regular classroom's work."
"I have three sons who are all currently in elementary school. My husband and I recently accompanied Unionville's Odyssey of the Mind Teams to World Finals in Iowa. We had three teams competing for Unionville and our sons were on a team. The competition and all of the extra-ordinary activities and exhibits were thrilling to me from the perspective of both a parent and an educator. It is amazing the creative solutions these little minds can create with guidance, patience, time and duct tape!"
Ms. Gunn loves to read, visit with friends and family, going to the Panther's game and traveling with family.
