Ms.Cabatit awarded Bright Ideas grant
A representative from Union Power Cooperative presents Ms. Cabatit with a big check.
Ms. Cabatit, the Marvin Ridge Middle School Art teacher, received a pleasant surprise on November 18 when representatives from Union Power Cooperative stopped by to award her with a Bright Ideas grant package. The Bright Ideas grant program, sponsored by the North Carolina Touchstone Energy cooperatives, awards deserving North Carolina educators with additional money to fund special projects or classroom programs.
Each year the cooperatives receive numerous applications and the award process is very competitive. This year, Ms. Cabatit was one of the deserving recipients of the grant with her innovative project titled “Speaking Up Through Talking Headsâ€. In September, 2010 she submitted her online grant proposal to Union Power Cooperative asking for startup funding for a puppet program. The money she received for this project will be used to buy puppetry supplies including professional puppets and a puppet stage. “Puppets are great communication tools which allow teachers and students to convey information in a fun and interactive environment. We already have plans to use them in an integrated Related Arts activity at the end of the year,†said Ms. Cabatit.
The puppets and stage will also be available to other departments and grade levels throughout the year for interdisciplinary units relating to social issues and other curriculum topics.
