On the morning of January 15, 2009, Dave Sanderson woke up an ordinary man, but that night he went to bed a hero. Last Monday, November 29, select students at Porter Ridge High School had the privilege to hear his story.

Sanderson, an average guy from Charlotte, NC, went through a terrifying experience. He was on of the 155 passengers and crew members on US Airways Flight 1549, which crash landed in the Hudson River. Instead of finding self pity in his misfortunes he uses his experience to inspire others.

“I want to share a message of gratitude, hope, and faith,” explains Sanderson. “The experience on Flight 1549 changed my life in ways I could never have imagined.”

As Sanderson spoke to a completely filled auditorium many stared at him in disbelief. They found it hard to imagine what he went through and the selflessness he showed while trying to help save his fellow passengers

“It really makes you think about your life,” admits Evelina Morare, “and how you should never take it for granted.

Over the past year Sanderson has spoken at over 100 events similar to the held at Porter Ridge. He has also published a book entitled “Brace for Impact” in which he discusses the crash and its last effects on his life.
