STAR-Students Taking Academic Responsibility

To support the UCPS Mission of “Preparing all students to succeed!” Parkwood High School is initiating STAR – Students Taking Academic Responsibility. STAR will begin Monday, January 3rd. Students will report to first block as usual and the program and schedule will be reviewed.

STAR is being developed based on proven strategies that have greatly improved schools’ academic performances and, more importantly, increased individual students’ academic successes.

STAR gives all students the opportunity to review previously taught concepts to better ensure understanding and retention. As determined by benchmark scoring and class performance, individual students struggling in core classes will have the opportunity during this block to receive tutoring or small group instruction. If the need is determined, additional weekly review time in these core classes may be achieved by utilizing an elective course STAR block. In some cases, this may result in up to 2 hours of targeted academic assistance.

This review during school hours will better serve all students. Tutoring will also continue in core subjects, before and after school. Parkwood High School’s staff and administration are committed to providing every opportunity possible for all students to succeed. Of course, students will have to be equally motivated to take advantage of these opportunities for this to have the greatest impact.

In the new schedule:
Mondays – STAR Block is for 1st Block
Tuesdays– STAR Block is for 2nd Block
Wednesdays – STAR Block is for 3rd Block
Thursdays – STAR Block is for 4th Block
Fridays – STAR Block will be used to increase school spirit – for example encouraging club participation, service projects participation, and team building.
