The Piedmont wrestling team is enjoying another great season!  The Panther wrestlers are 16 – 1 and currently ranked in the top 3 in the State.  There are seven wrestlers who are ranked in Division 2A.   Parker VonEgidy, who finished 6th in the State as a freshman last year, is currently ranked #1 in his weight class.  Stephen Ivey, who finished #2 in the State last year, is ranked #2.  In addition, Alex Turner, Kyle Eiss, Dillon Nelson, Kirby Haigler, and Neil Thomas are also State ranked.  The Panthers are gearing up to win a 3rd straight Rocky River Conference title and will be participating in three tournaments in the month of January.   The feature tournament will be the Bob Mauldin Classic at Piedmont, which will feature the #1 ranked 3A and the #3 ranked 4A teams in the State.

When asked about this year’s wrestling team, Coach Jamie Belk said, “I’m really happy with the level of intensity our guys are showing on the mat and the character and leadership that they are developing both on and off the mat.”  As for the team’s goals for the 2010-2011 season, Coach Belk replied, “Simply stated, to win a State championship, but to do that, we have to first win our conference, and then our region. We’ll take it one step at a time until we reach our ultimate goal of winning a State championship.”

In addition to the notable records and rankings, a special highlight to this year’s team are Michael McLamb and Trevor Nelson, who are first-year starters who have helped solidify the Panther line-up.  Coach Belk attributes their significant contribution to their dedication and hard work ethic.   Good luck Panthers in the remainder of the season and throughout the State playoffs!
