Band Members Selected to District Honor Band
On Saturday, January 8th, over 2,000 students auditioned for the South Central District Honor Band in Belmont, North Carolina. Piedmont was well represented with four students earning a seat in the honor band. Leslie Elzey on French Horn, David Clouse on Tuba, Daniel Tucker on Trumpet, and Kristina Drye on Oboe all earned an opportunity to participate with the group. Students spend months preparing solos and scales, as well as performing a sight reading piece. In the sight reading portion, students are given a piece of music that they have never seen before. They have one minute to study it without making any sounds on their instrument and then have to perform the music in front of the judges. This is a very difficult and stressful experience for all students when they have to perform something they have no idea how the music actually sounds until they start playing it.
Daniel earned the highest score of the day on trumpet and will be sitting 1st chair in the All-District Honor Band. Daniel will also be representing Piedmont in March when he will audition for the North Carolina All-State Honor Band.
The honor band clinic will be held on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, NC on January 28 and 29. Along with the four Piedmont band students, 73 other musicians from Union County middle school and high schools will be participating in the 2011 All-District Honor Band. All participants will come together for the first time that Friday morning, rehearse all day, as well as for 3 more hours on Saturday morning, and then perform a concert Saturday afternoon. The concert will be held in the PE Monroe Auditiorium at Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, January 29th. The concert will begin at 2 pm. It is FREE and open to the general public.
