Fourth Grade Mines for Gems!

Fourth grade students examine their gem discoveries.

On Monday, November 29, 2010, the fourth graders at Waxhaw Elementary had the chance to take part in a very unique experience. They went gem mining! Thanks to Diamond Del (aka Gus Navarro) and his mobile gem mine, students were able to pan for gold literally in their own backyards.

Students were first introduced to the types of gems and minerals they would find during their experience. They then entered the mobile gem mine and began to wash out their boxes of mining ore just like real miners would. As each gem and mineral was found, students compared it to an identification chart above their mining stations.

Each child left the experience with lots of smiles and a very full bag of gems and minerals. One fourth grader, as he headed back to class, was overheard saying, “This was the best day ever!” The students will use what they learned during this field trip in an upcoming science unit on rocks and minerals.
