Playing the Stock Market

Shelia Appling explains the basics of the stock market to students.

This past month students in Shelia Appling’s Fourth grade AIG Math class have been reading the book “The Westing Game,” by Ellen Raskin.

This book is a mystery involving 16 characters who come together for the reading of Samuel W. Westing’s will. The characters find out that they are being challenged with playing a game, called the Westing Game, which involves money and the Stock Market. The characters discover they could become millionaires or they could lose everything, it all depends on how they play the game.

As the students were reading this book, Appling discovered they had lots of questions about the Stock Market. In order to solve the mysteries of the Stock Market, Appling asked Jeff Carlini, a CPA from Potter and Company in Monroe, to visit.

“What is a stock?” and “How much does a stock cost?” are questions we asked Mr. Carlini,” said Reece McManus, a fourth grader from Brianne Durant’s class. “Mr. Carlini taught us about stocks and we played a game using the stock information from the newspaper,” McManus said. “This was a good experience. It taught me more about how the stock market works,” said Reece McManus after the lesson.
