Positively Peru in Kindergarten's Global Study

Kindergarten Teachers in Peruvian dress: Pat Snodgrass, Marcia Phaneuf, Cathy Marrow, Lydia Paquette, Kelly Hamilton, Victoria Tolbert, Ava Haywood, and Bebe Cunningham

On December 17th, the Kindergarten classes at Waxhaw Elementary enjoyed learning many things about the country of Peru.

During this cultural day, teachers were dressed in authentic Peruvian clothing provided by JAARS.  Kindergarten teacher Kelly Hamilton’s comment regarding the costumes was, “Boy are these itchy!”

The children explored different aspects of Peruvian life.

Jack Sluiter, a jungle pilot in Peru, shared a PowerPoint about the regions, wild life and food. The children made a Peruvian mask, which is used during ceremonies. The children learned several dances to share with their parents.

One of the teachers told a Peruvian folktale called Love and Roast Chicken by Barbara Knutson. Cole Stidham commented, “ This story is like that Chicken Little story about the sky falling”

After learning about the country of Peru, each child made a repeating pattern of Peruvian symbols to review what they learned about Peru and our math objective (building and extending patterns).
