CATA Student Wins District Poetry Out Loud Competition

Casey Swoope (right) accepts her certificate declaring her the winner of the district Poetry Out Loud competition from Cheryl Jones, HS English Curriculum Coordinator.

On Monday, January 31, 2011, at Porter Ridge HS, there was a great turn-out for the District Poetry Out Loud competition.

Thirteen very talented contestants from Central Academy, Cuthbertson, Piedmont, Porter Ridge, and Weddington high schools represented the top winners at each of their school-level competitions.

The winner is Casey Swoope from Central Academy who recited “Enigma” by Anne Stevenson and “On Monsier’s Departure” by Queen Elizabeth I.

Casey is a senior at CATA who “loves reading, singing, and going to see live theatre.” Casey's English teacher is Jennifer Clark.

The alternate is Kristin Geczi, a freshman at Weddington High School. She recited “Numbers” by Mary Cornish and “Silence” by Thomas Hood.

Kristin’s favorite poem is “Fire and Ice” by Robert Frost because she likes “how he doesn’t necessarily personify them, but simply connects fire and ice with feelings.” Kristin's English teacher is Scotti Youngman.

Casey Swoope will travel to Raleigh on March 5 to compete in the North Carolina Poetry Out Loud completion to be held at North Carolina Museum of History Auditorium. We all wish Casey best of luck representing Union County Public Schools!
