Robotics Club Wins Grant
Congratulations to the Pre-Engineering Academy's Robotics Club for being awarded a $5000.00 NASA Grant to build and compete in a US First Robotic's Competition! The grant was presented to Principal Rod Miller and Pre-Engineering Teacher Michael Hardy by the President and Plant Manager of Allvac in Monroe. Many Fortune 500 Companies participate in this competition. Union Power Cooperative has also made a $100.00 donation to the club to help them purchase additional materials.
The team will compete in the Palmetto Regional Competition at Clemson University in March after a 6 week build season that will begin in January. US First Robotics is sponsored by the US Department of Labor, US Department of Education and the title sponsor is NASA. CATA teaches the Project Lead The Way National curriculum in the Pre-Engineering Academy and US First Robotics was created to go “hand-in-hand†with this curriculum. The team is looking for additional donations to help them with this project.
The Robotics club is challenged with this year’s competition called Breakaway. Breakaway is a Robotic game of soccer. You can see an animation by visiting USFirst.org. Our team is the CATA-BOTS. CATA’s team is building a Robot that can drive over the obstacles and kick the ball down the field. The Robot will be equipped with a vision system, so it can see the ball and make plays. They are currently setting up the control system and building the chassis together with special wheels for easy maneuverability. Feel free to stop by Mr. Hardy's classroom and see the club’s progress. This week they start remote drive system testing and the students are prototyping the kicking mechanism. Hope to see you soon!
